3 Synology NAS devices to watch out for on Black Friday

Synology offers a wide range of NAS devices suited for different use cases.

However, here are the three that we’ll be keeping an especially close eye on during the Black Friday sales in order to snag the best possible prices!

1. Synology DS220J – Best NAS for beginners

  • Promo: TBC
  • Discounted price: TBC
  • Regular price: $169.99
  • CPU: 1.4GHz 4-core
  • RAM: 512 MB DDR4 non-ECC
  • Drive bays: x2
  • Full specifications: Learn more on Amazon

Synology DS220J in a nutshell: Extremely cost-effective and great for basic home use, the Synology DS220J is a great starter device for those new to NAS systems.

The DS220J is a very compact 2-bay NAS that doesn’t come with fancy frills, but is an excellent option for anyone looking for a simple NAS solution. It’s the perfect choice for many beginners who are entering the world of NAS and don’t want to spend a fortune.

Whilst the DS220J may struggle to serve multiple streams of high-definition content, the stripped-down configuration of this NAS unit has a lot of benefits, the most obvious one being that it’s very affordable!

In all, this is a fantastic choice for anyone whose main concern is simply data redundancy. Plus, the small and unassuming size of this NAS has a neat but functional design.

2. Synology DS420+ – Best NAS for prosumers

synology ds200j

  • Promo: TBC
  • Discounted price: TBC
  • Regular price: $499
  • CPU: 2GHz 2-core CPU
  • RAM: 2 GB DDR4 non-ECC
  • Drive bay: x4, with x2 M.2 Slots
  • Full specifications: Learn more on Amazon

Synology DS420+ in a nutshell: The DS420+ fits a pretty niche space and offers just the right specs to match advanced home users who like to experiment a little without having to spend a fortune on a very expensive NAS.

Synology’s DS420+ is a much more robust alternative to the DS220J. It is a 4-bay model that also comes with more powerful hardware. The Celeron J processor may not be the fastest around, but it’s considerably competent when used in NAS.

Aside from what comes out of the box, you can upgrade the DS420+ in a couple of ways. If necessary, you can bump up the RAM to 6GB, which should be enough to give you a large cache buffer if you want a cheaper alternative to using expensive NVME for that purpose.

If you intend to put the DS420+ to heavy use, though, the dual NVME slots will come in useful. Slap on two sticks of NVME drives, and your NAS will be able to handle simultaneous read and write operations for an entire small office.

3. Synology DS1621+ – Best NAS for home office

synology ds1621

  • Promo: TBC
  • Discounted price: TBC
  • Regular price: $860
  • CPU: 2.2GHz 4-core
  • RAM: 4 GB DDR4 ECC RAM
  • Drive bay: x4, with x2 M.2 Slots
  • Full specifications: Learn more on Amazon

Synology DS1621+ in a nutshell: Whilst it may be overkill for home use, this Synology NAS is the perfect model for most small offices. It’s got great scalability and high cache potential.

If you’re looking at a NAS device that will survive past the first years of a growing business, the DS1621+ is a fantastic choice.

This NAS is both very reliable and can be expanded significantly when you need more space. Not only can it support a healthy maximum of 32GB of memory, but it moves away from non-ECC memory. ECC, or Error-Correcting Code memory, is used in servers and increases resilience by protecting the data it caches.

Aside from being able to store large amounts, the DS1621+ can use Synology expansion modules. This lets it stack with dual DX517 units to offer a total of 16 drive bays! That’s more storage that most small offices would ever really need – which means no more expensive upgrades in the near future.

Why is Synology our top recommended NAS brand?

A while back, we tasked ourselves to discover the best NAS devices on the market. After much research and hands-on testing, Synology emerged as our recommended NAS brand, for a whole bunch of reasons.

Who are they? Well, Synology is one of the most well-known NAS brands out there, and has been in the market for over two decades. Based in Taiwan, they’ve got a very solid global presence and a regional HQ in North America. Their solutions cater to all levels of users, from simple home setups to enterprise-scale systems.

One thing that Synology does particularly well is its focus on the software side of things. Synology NAS have very comprehensive application support and their unique Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR). Plus Synology’s operating system, Synology DSM, offers a fantastically streamlined experience for setting up and using your NAS.

We’ve also written a direct comparison of Synology and another leading NAS brand, QNAP. Read our QNAP vs Synology guide here!

Why is Black Friday the best time to grab a NAS?

Whether you’re a movie buff, data hoarder, business owner or anyone using some form of digital device – there’s something a NAS can do for you.

NAS have a huge range of uses, from backing up your precious photos and files and setting up a home media server, to establishing a centralized data storage solution … the list goes on.

Thing is – Synology NAS devices very rarely go on sale. Black Friday is one of the only times of year where you can grab some incredible bargains.

Why is NAS usually so expensive?

Buying your first NAS can take a leap of faith since they aren’t exactly cheap.

Many people compare them to other external storage devices such as portable drives, although in reality this isn’t entirely fair since NAS devices can do more than simply store or backup data. Besides storage drives, NAS will also generally include:

  1. Dedicated processors
  2. Memory
  3. An independent NAS-specific Operating System (OS)

These additional advanced components can make NAS significantly more expensive.

Are NAS devices worth the investment? Absolutely! NAS come with a tonne of unique advantages and, in the long run, are one of the most cost-efficient ways to secure large amounts of storage. However, Black Friday deals on Synology NAS will definitely take some of the sting out of the higher prices, so don’t let the chance pass you by.

Don’t miss Synology’s NAS Black Friday 2021 Deals!

Whilst there are quite a few very recognizable brands in the NAS space, Synology NAS is definitely our top recommended choice.

As we’ve mentioned, it isn’t often that Synology NAS devices go on sale and if you miss these Black Friday sales, it may be a while before we see prices drop again.

Many home users and business owners can benefit hugely from picking up a Synology NAS deal this month – we definitely can’t wait. Just remember to move quickly before they’re gone!
