“Truly well-balanced hosting. Super speeds, localized support and brilliant value for money makes Hostinger our top pick!”

This little Lithuanian web hosting company has made waves internationally with their seriously fast server speeds and very affordable prices.

In fact – when we did some market research on leading web host brands, Hostinger turned out to be the most sought-after web host of 2020 (Read the full report here).

Upon discovering that they’ve got a data center in Singapore, we decided to create a test site with them to see how they fare against the best of the best web hosting companies around.

After doing some testing, we decided that they deserve a spot on the big boy’s table here on this list. Hostinger Singapore definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Their Singapore server did really well in our server response time test, with a worldwide average of 168.9 ms, and under 100 ms in Singapore, Japan, Sydney, and Bangalore, but that’s already expected, being an international web host and all.

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
179 ms 250 ms 216 ms 3 ms 347 ms
Bangalore Sydney Japan Canada Germany

What really impressed us was the amount of value we got at their irresistibly low price point. Our Premium Shared plan only cost SGD8.10 per month and the number of features we received with it felt almost criminal.

We got almost all of the same benefits of the premium web hosting counterparts, namely:

  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • 100GB SSD
  • NGINX caching
  • PHP7 support
  • GIT support

These are just a few of the features we received, but the icing on this very beautiful cake is that Hostinger provides their premium shared users with 1 free domain name! It’s a small gesture that really has a big impact, especially for beginner business owners who are worried about snowballing start-up costs.

We feel that Hostinger really cares for their customers because of how they structure and train their support team. Their support widget can be easily found on the bottom right of their dashboard, which eases frustration because who wants to hunt for the damn link to the live chat when something goes wrong with our websites?

Their service is available in 40+ countries and in 13 different languages to make communications easier (including Mandarin and Malay!). They’re also really knowledgeable and super helpful. They don’t mind holding your hand and guiding you step-by-step to fix your website woes, no matter how silly they may be.

Needless to say, we really like Hostinger. They’re able to offer premium-like features & speeds at super affordable prices (from SGD8.10 a month) – perfect for beginners and startups.

“Excellent premium web hosting that’s ideal for businesses - with insanely fast speeds & secure servers!”

SiteGround is a strong contender – especially when it comes to customer service. They’ll respond to any of your issues quickly, and they are a tremendously knowledgeable bunch. If you ask nicely, they’ll even tell you where to find the best chilli crab in Singapore (OKAY I’M KIDDING!).

Our problems were solved without transferring us to different departments, saving us the hassle of repeating our issues over and over again until somebody can help us, which is a major time saver.

Feature wise, SiteGround didn’t disappoint:

  • SSD Storage – Check
  • Storage Space – 20 freakin’ gigs
  • Websites allowed – As many as you want
  • Bandwidth – Up to 25,000 visits
  • Worldwide Speed: A+

All for a measly SGD10.80 a month (I eat snacks more expensive than that!).

They’ve recently moved their entire infrastructure to the Google Cloud Platform, which allows for easy scalability, better security and faster speeds for their users. Throw in additional perks like their ready-to-use caching system and the SuperCacher, and SiteGround has a clear advantage over the rest.

When we put the host through our unique server speed checker, SiteGround produced phenomenal results, with a worldwide average ranking of 159.9 ms, and an average of 58.5 ms in Asia!

In Singapore itself, SiteGround’s response time is a lightning fast 3 ms, thanks to their local data center!

For the benefit of our readers who don’t understand what these numbers mean – It’s blazing fast!

“World-famous hosting service endorsed by WordPress and with an 100% uptime guarantee.”

If we’re talking about international players, it’s only natural to also mention DreamHost! Headquartered in California, DreamHost has served over 400,000 customers and 1.5 million sites.

Speed-wise, DreamHost doesn’t joke around. Thanks to their use of speed-boosting SSD servers, DreamHost scored a solid A+ ranking on our speed tests, with an impressive worldwide average of 118.4 ms.

US (W) US (E) London Singapore São Paulo
70 ms 2 ms 77 ms 242 ms 117 ms
Bangalore Sydney Japan Canada Germany
194 ms 210 ms 169 ms 16 ms 87 ms
Avg. Speed: 118.4 ms – See full result

A key point to note here is that DreamHost has only 2 data centers that are both based in the US. As expected, speeds got significantly slower when serving regions further away from the North American continent. We noticed the average response time for Asia is 203.75 ms, with Singapore pinging back 242 ms.

Whilst these speeds aren’t ideal, bear in mind it’s only a real problem if your website audience is based in this part of the world. BUT, if your website is mostly serving audiences in the US or Europe, we’d say DreamHost is one of the best hosts you can pick from. To start with – their average worldwide speed is actually the fastest out of all the hosts on this list!

They’re especially awesome if you plan to host a WordPress site. They’re actually 1 of only 3 web hosts who are ‘officially’ endorsed by WordPress. For them – it’s a great vote of confidence. For you – it means WordPress runs beautifully, you’ll have access to a support team of WP experts, and you’ll be able to use their nifty drag-and-drop WP Website Builder to get your site up quickly.

Plus, when we look at DreamHost’s features – we really have nothing to complain about.

  • SSD storage – Yessir!
  • Storage Space – A fabulous 50GB on the Starter, or you can upgrade to unlimited
  • Websites Allowed – 1, or upgrade to unlimited
  • Bandwidth – Unlimited
  • Worldwide Speed: A+

What are the drawbacks of DreamHost? As we’ve said, we can’t help but wish they had some data centers outside the US too. Their US-focus also means that, if you want to use their live chat, you’ll need to observe the working hours of the Pacific time zone.

BUT, if most of your audience is near the US, plus you’re not a fan of Hostinger’s branding or SiteGround’s prices – definitely check DreamHost out!

“With unlimited features, A2 Hosting is best for small businesses & personal sites running on WordPress.”

A2 Hosting is an international web hosting provider, and their services are expected to meet a certain international level of standards. We’re very happy to say that from our experience, A2 Hosting easily surpasses our expectations.

When we ran our server speed test on A2 Hosting, we didn’t expect much from them but we were pleasantly surprised at the results – A worldwide average of 173.2 ms, and an average of 94.25 ms in Asia.

US (W) US (E) London Singapore Sao Paulo
172 ms 212 ms 278 ms 6 ms 316 ms

Avg. Speed: 173.2 ms – See full result

With a data center right here in Singapore, A2 managed to produce a response time of only 6 ms locally. Pretty damn fast!

On paper, their numbers may not perform as well as our #1 web host Hostinger, but with global speed averaging at 173.2 ms, loading up your page is practically instantaneous! We also appreciate the fact that we didn’t encounter any issues whatsoever, and we think that they are pretty damn reliable.

Let’s talk about features!

  • SSD Storage? Oh yes!
  • Storage Space? Unlimited – how awesome is that?
  • Websites Allowed – I think unlimited is like the standard these days
  • Bandwidth – Also unlimited – A2 clearly doesn’t like to impose limitations!
  • Worldwide Speed: A+

Their A2-Optimised feature is swell and it works really well with different CMS. Their proprietary tech also gets along really well with WordPress, Joomla, Magento and others, pushing the system to give you the fastest speed possible at all times!

Now, take in everything you’ve read about A2 hosting, all the features, the speed, everything – how much would you pay for service like this?

SGD15 a month? SGD20?

Naaaah.

This package will only cost you a mere SGD12.35 a month. If that’s not good value, I don’t know what is.

The only thing we had to complain about (and really, we’re nitpicking here) is the speed of the live chat. It took us longer than usual to connect to someone, but once we did, we found their support staff to be very experienced and helpful. So yeah, live chat is a little slow to respond but when it comes to speed and reliability, we can safely say that A2 Hosting is A-Okay.

“A local favourite with a full range of web hosting services.”

Next, we tested one of Singapore’s finest, combed through their features and sweet talked their customer service team, just to help you decide which host to go with.

Surprisingly, for a brand as prominent as them, their customer service is… to put it in milder terms, not great. It took them 12 hours to respond to an issue we encountered while setting up the test site. 12 hours! That’s 3 and a half days in dog years! Fortunately, when they DID respond, the issue was resolved quickly and professionally.

Feature-wise, Vodien did quite well.

  • SSD Storage? Yes, but only on Business Hosting plans
  • Storage Space? 15 gigs – not bad!
  • Websites Allowed – Limited to 5, but do we really need more than that?
  • Bandwidth – It says unlimited’
  • Worldwide Speed: A

Not bad right? Everything seems comparable to the top ranking web hosts so far. Everything except for the price. You see, for us to get an accurate apple-to-apple comparison data, we had to use Vodien’s bizValue plan.

In other words, this is their super expensive, premium package, which costs a whopping SGD29 a month. I don’t know about you guys, but to me, that seems mighty expensive.

Thankfully, Vodien seems to justify their prices when it comes to server speed. With a worldwide average ranking of 177.6 ms, 95.5 ms in Asia, and 6 ms in Singapore, you know that your customers aren’t waiting long to load up your site.

Numbers-wise, they are slightly slower compared to the other 4 hosts above but at 177.6 ms, you won’t be able to tell the difference.

Why Good Web Hosting Is Important In Singapore

Our Sweet Singapore is the obvious choice for a digital hub for South East Asia.

Aside from having the resources to attract the brightest talents from all over the world, we’ve cemented ourselves as a digital R&D hub, ranked as #1 in Asia in 2017’s Global Innovation Index.

Our lightning fast IT infrastructure has also made us the preferred choice for digital tech companies, with Silicon Valley giants like facebook, Yahoo and Google setting up base on Singaporean grounds to target the Asean markets.

With heavy hitters like these in our shores, they’ll naturally attract talents from all over, bright minds that will set up online businesses here as side hustles. These people will no doubt understand that sales is directly linked to site load speed, hence going for good web hosting providers with the fastest response times.

If you’re looking to have any chance of your business competing with these people, you’re going to want to ensure that your web hosting provider is up to par, at least in regards to speed. It’s important that the service should not just be fast locally, but able to provide you with competitive loading times globally as well.

How To Choose A Good Web Host

Just pick the cheapest one and run with it! It’s just a website, who cares right?

WRONG!

Selecting the wrong web host can be downright detrimental to your business and web presence. A web host is like a foundation to a building – without the right base, everything is eventually gonna fall apart. Ideally, you’ll want your foundation to be strong, fast and reliable.

Let’s have a look at the factors and features every good web host should have.

  1. SpeedNeedless to say, this is of utmost importance. In this world of fast moving tech and instant gratification, your potential customers will just click ‘x’ if your site doesn’t load up fast enough. At Bitcatcha, we measure server speeds and give every host a score from A+ to E.
  2. Speed where your audience isIdeally, you’ll want your server to perform fastest at your targeted audience’s location. Having really fast server speeds in London isn’t really relevant when you’re targeting Singaporeans!
  3. Uptime Nobody likes paying for a web hosting service and having downtime on their sites. Look for a webhost that can commit to at least 99.8% uptime.
  4. SecurityYour site is an extension of your brand, and it may hold all of your precious data. You wouldn’t want a host that is easily hackable! Make sure your host has strong security credentials and automatic malware scanning.
  5. Customer ServiceMurphy’s Law states that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong at the worst possible time. This applies to servers and websites too. When it does happen, it’ll be nice to have people you can depend on to help you out, so having 24/7/365 customer service support is essential.
  6. BackupsAlways have a backup plan. In this case a good host should always have automatic backups of your data, just in case anything goes wrong.
  7. Storage & BandwidthYou’ll want as much of this as possible, as it directly affects how much data you can load to the servers (images, content, etc). It also controls how much traffic per month you’re allowed.
  8. PriceYou know that old adage that goes “nothing good is cheap, nothing cheap is good”? Yeah you’re gonna want to take heed. However, get something that suits your needs – you don’t need a super expensive webhost if you’re just running a small website. Just be a little careful with the uber cheap ones.

How We Test Web Hosts for Singapore

In order for us to rank and review the web hosts fairly, we purchased their hosting plans and set up test sites for each of the web hosts. We then test them for uptime, customer support, and most importantly, server speed.

We made sure that our test sites were physically hosted on the companies’ Singaporean datacenters, so that we could run our server speed test on all 5 brands using the same parameters.

Using Bitcatcha’s very own Server Speed Checker, we sent pings from 10 different locations around the world, measuring the time it takes for the servers to respond to each one of those pings. We then rank the web hosts from A to E, depending on how well they perform against Core Web Vitals.

core web vitals

These Web Vitals are measured using 3 metrics: Visual stability, Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and First Input Delay (FID). 2 out of these 3 metrics are highly dependent on loading speed, so the quicker the server’s response time is, the better they’ll be ranked.

This is actually quite important because if you pick a host with slow response times, it’ll take longer for your site to load up, causing your customers to lose interest, which loses you the sale.

Fun fact – according to thinkwithgoogle, websites should load under 1 second.

32% of users will bounce if page load time takes up to 3 seconds

Because if site load speeds take between 1-3 seconds, the probability of users losing interest is a whopping 32%!

We had a lovely time reviewing these 5 brands, but it also made it super difficult for us to pick a winner.

It boils down to a matter of preference (some people might prefer local Singaporean hosts, some might prefer international ones) because each one of these brands are excellent, with impressive features and numbers to back them up.

However, the main deciding factor for us would be value. The international brands gave us everything we needed with their entry-level packages, which costs below SGD14 per month.

The local brands could compete, but only with their premium packages which can cost up to SGD50 per month.

Their entry level packages come with only HDD storage options, which isn’t ideal especially as we’re dealing with speed and load times. They also seem to lack 24/7 support, something which is quite important to us.

Thanks to their speed, features and excellent customer support, I’d have to say that Hostinger is the BEST web hosting in Singapore for us.

They offer true-blue, well-balanced hosting. You’ll enjoy great server speeds, regardless of where your audience is based – plus world-grade tech at a price that’s WAY cheaper than local providers!

However, if you prefer to go with any of the other brands, don’t sweat it. All the ones on this list perform really well locally and internationally, as verified by our server speed checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I host a website for free?

Yes. There are plenty of free web hosting services around that you can utilize for your website. However, they come with performance restrictions, handicaps, and ads displayed on your website (which you have no control over). If you’re looking to actually build traffic and generate revenue through your site, we would strongly advise against going for these free services.

2. What is the cheapest and best web hosting service?

Hostinger is the best cheap web hosting you can get at a budget. At only $0.99 a month (with their 48-mo plan), you’ll enjoy a free domain and SSL, unlimited bandwidth, 100GB SSD – more than enough for small or personal websites.

3. What is the average cost to host a website?

Shared web hosting costs an average of $12 to $420 per year – excluding domain and SSL. Domains would typically cost you $10 – $20 a year, while SSL can cost anything from as little as $8 up to $1000 per annum. These can build up to cost quite a bit, so we highly recommend a web hosting service that offers both domain AND SSL for free.

4. Which hosting is best for websites?

Figure out the purpose of your website, and find out which kind of web hosting would be best to fulfil that purpose. For small business or personal sites, shared web hosting is usually enough to cover all the bases. If it’s for a large to medium website, best not cheap out – go for something that provides you with more resources like VPS hosting.

5. Where can I host my WordPress website?

We recommend going with Hostinger – they offer optimized WordPress hosting environment, with LiteSpeed WebServer, accelerator, and 24/7 dedicated WordPress team as support.

6. Does it matter where I host my website?

Yes. Websites are hosted on data centers – physical servers that are used to house all your website data. The location of these data centers affect how fast your website loads for your visitors in certain regions. The closer the data center is to your visitors, the quicker your site will load for them.
